Greetings to Middle School Families!
The first three days of 2020-2021 are in the books! Thank you to parents/guardians that have sent so many encouraging emails to school teams! Newsletter submitted by, Kathi McCollumn, GDRMS Principal
Thank you, in advance, for reminding your middle schooler that they are to keep masks on and remain in their assigned seats on the bus for the entire ride. The purpose of assigned seats is so that we are able to conduct contact tracing if needed. Failure to follow either of these requirements will result in students being suspended from the bus. We know that wearing a mask all day can be a strain, here’s a video about taking mask breaks.
Desks and Chairs
Since students are spending more time in one chair/desk – at school and probably at home, as well, here is a suggestion: Parents may send in ‘risers’ for the desk legs to provide an opportunity to shift to a standing desk. The risers can be purchased at 5 Below, Walmart, etc for $5-$10 and can be used as needed.
This year, students in school will eat lunch in the cafeteria and homerooms, alternating weekly in each. In order to keep students safe while eating in homerooms, we will have to make some of our classrooms peanut and tree nut free spaces. The following homerooms will be nut free during the weeks that they are eating in classrooms: Grade 5 = Mr. Gannon and Ms. Osterholtz; in Grade 6 = Ms. Connery, Mr. Robinson, Ms. Copeland, and Mr. John; in Grade 7 = Ms. Masse, Ms. Perreault, and Ms. Witt; in Grade 8 = Ms. LaPierre, Ms. Mitchell, Ms. Pflanz, Mr. Bennett, Ms. Blydenburgh, and Mr. Humphrey.
Social Emotional Learning
‘Self – Awareness’ [9/16 – 10/7]
During remote and hybrid SEL lessons, and embedded into core and IA classes, students will be exploring the SEL competency of ‘Self Awareness’, defined as: the ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts and values and how they influence behavior. The ability to accurately see one’s strengths and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.”

From your new PTO President, Sara Fieberg: Around this time the PTO is usually asking for a ‘one and done’ donation. However, this year with all the uncertainty, we did not feel like asking for money was in anyone’s best interest. So we have decided to put that on hold for the time being and wait to see how the school year progresses. We WILL however continue to do what we can for the school. We will be having an ONLINE book fair, while not ideal as being in person, we hope that you will still participate. We will also have our Square One art virtually as well. We will be having fundraisers via local restaurants and will send more information soon. After this first quarter passes we will reevaluate and decide what to do next. We hope that you all saw the ‘We Love our Teachers’ sign at the entrance to the school. The PTO decided that was the best way that we could show support to GDRMS staff for all of their hard work. We will continue to do what we can to support parents and teachers during this unprecedented time!
