Principal Notes – January 29th

Dear Florence Roche Families,

I hope you all stay warm over this frigid last weekend of January.  We have been fortunate thus far not having to deal with any major snowstorms.  Hopefully, the weather forecasters’ predictions for a winter storm next week are not accurate..

A huge thank you to our PTA and 2nd grade parents for providing our OliveGardenentire staff with lunch this afternoon.  We definitely felt your support and appreciation having soup and salad from the Olive Garden!  It was such a nice treat and food always brings a community together.  Thank you!

February kicks of with a couple of exciting events.  On Wednesday, February 3rd Florence Roche students, both in person and remote, will be included in our celebration of the Global Day of Play and World Read Aloud Day.

Please check out the details for these two exciting events.

From our physical education teacher, Mrs. Kinneen:

Global Day of Play

On Wednesday, February 3rd all Florence Roche learners are invited to participate in  Global School Play Day! This grassroots effort was created in 2015 by educators as a show of support for unstructured playtime for students around the world.   Check out this press release for more information about how and why it all started!

Each FloRo classroom, both hybrid and remote, will celebrate Global Day of Play in their own way, so be sure to stay tuned for specific information from your child’s teacher.  And please check out these links for timely and relevant information about

The Necessity of Unstructured Play, The Decline of Play in Our Culture, and The Importance of Outdoor Play in Winter.

Learning from home this year?  Check out How to Keep the Spirit of Play Alive During Distance Learning for ways to add more play into the school day at home.

Finally, play is not merely simplistic and trivial with no educational value. This article Play Helps Children Become Smart and Happy Adults: Here’s How examines how unstructured play builds confidence, encourages creativity and provides opportunities for children to practice and refine important social skills.

Speed Stacking Reminder

SpeedSticksThis year every student at Florence Roche is receiving a set of Speed Stacks stacking cups through the generosity of the Groton Commissioners of Trust and our FloRo PTA  as well as support from Mr. O’Donoghue.   We look forward to using our Speed Stacks in Physical Education and at recess!

Remote students can pick up their child’s Speed Stacks kit in the FloRo lobby if they have not done so yet.  Hybrid students’ cups will be distributed at school.

Please check out these links for more information about the sport of Speed Stacking and these fun, easy to follow step-by-step Speed Stacking tutorials
