The Florence Roche Elementary School is overjoyed to announce the addition of over 1,200 new books to its brand-new library and media center, creating a fresh, dynamic space where students can explore the world of reading. This vibrant collection of new books, featuring additions from timeless favorites by Beverly Cleary and popular graphic novels by Raina Telgemeier, ensures that every student can find something captivating, whether they love adventure, humor, or mystery.
Our Florence Roche students will discover updated nonfiction books on everything from planets and the Amazon to World War II while also noticing an Early Reader section that will be more than double in size! Additionally, with new resources for English Learners (EL), every child has the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of reading.
At the heart of this transformation is Mrs. Beth Pendal, the school’s dedicated library paraprofessional, who has been tirelessly tagging and cataloging the new books and then covering them with the new Colibri Covering system, all in preparation for eager readers. Capturing her passion for literacy, Mrs. Pendal brings stories to life through engaging read-alouds. She helps each student find the perfect book, making the library a welcoming and vibrant place for all. “Our goal is to create a library space that feels like home for every student,” Mrs. Pendal shared. “By reviving beloved classics and shedding light on new and upcoming authors, we hope to inspire curiosity, generate new excitement, and foster a love for reading.”
As we know, reading is a powerful tool for student growth, expanding vocabulary, enhancing creativity, and improving academic performance. Studies show that regular reading is linked to higher success across all subjects. Beyond academics, reading offers personal benefits—helping reduce stress, build empathy, and promote better sleep.
With expanded library books available, Florence Roche Elementary provides a nurturing learning environment where students can explore new topics, discover interests, and immerse themselves in the joys of reading…and a great book. These resources will enrich students' learning journeys, whether they explore nature, step into a fantasy world, or enjoy a quiet moment.
Special thanks to Park Street Books in Medfield for helping to bring this inspiring collection to Florence Roche Elementary! Mrs. Pendal added, “With such a variety now available, our library is more than just a place to borrow —it’s also a gateway to imagination and success for each student.”
