This week is Autism Awareness Week, and Groton Dunstable Regional High School is celebrating with several spirited events. The week was created in collaboration with Groton-Dunstable Regional School District Special Education Committee (GDRSD SEPAC,).
Dubbed "Magnificent Monday," students in the gymnasium participated in a "Wake Up Call" for Autism Acceptance by holding signs and waving hands but remaining silent.
The recorded event was later aired on the Tuesday 5:15 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. broadcasts of Boston Channel 5 Eye Opener Program.
Rick Area, Assistant Principal and Dean of Students, explained that participants were encouraged to wear unique hats or hair to recognize the unique neurology with Autism and how the mind works in our diverse group of learners.
Arena noted these are "typical sensitivities that affect our students" and explained the adjustment to visually show excitement rather than the conventional approach of audible energy. " Arena continued, "Instead of making loud cheers, we held signs and waved hands so all students could feel comfortable participating."
Other activities and support shows will continue throughout the week, such as "Sensory Friendly Friday," where students dress in comfortable clothes and sunglasses.
