Hello Middle School families. I hope you have a great weekend.
We have a full memo this week. I do try to highlight the subject for easier reading.
World of Difference will be hosting their first ever Culture Fair from April 8th-April 11th. Our focus is to showcase all of the cultures present in our community; instead of overlooking cultures, we want to acknowledge and celebrate them. We want to build an understanding of diversity by including many cultures, improve intergroup relations by showcasing our cultures, and recognize the differences these cultures have as well as bringing the community together. This fair was sponsored by GDEF. And a huge shout out to our Advisors and students who worked hard to make this happen.
Day of Silence April 12th. The GLSEN Day of Silence is a national student-led demonstration where LGBTQ students and allies all around the country—and the world—take a vow of silence to protest the harmful effects of harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ people in schools.
Started in the mid 90’s by two college students, the Day of Silence has expanded to reach hundreds of thousands of students each year. Every April, students go through the school day without speaking.
Students who are silent:
know they are still responsible for the work of the day.
are aware that there may be academic consequences for their silence.
will have a card explaining their choice with them.
Best Buddies, meeting Wednesday April 11th in the North Cafe.
From our Science Department,
The 2024 Solar Eclipse is happening on Monday! Groton will experience a partial solar eclipse but 94% of the sun will be covered by the moon! The eclipse begins around 2:25, peaks at 3:29 and ends around 4:30. Students will be given viewing glasses from their science teachers on Monday. Safety while viewing the eclipse is very important - please talk to your child and make sure you have eclipse glasses of your own if you plan on viewing! Do you want to learn more? Check out this website or this video. Students are also encouraged to wear yellow, gray or blue to represent the sun, moon and Earth to celebrate "Eclipse Day"!

The GD Boosters are trying to get more teams to participate in the cornhole tournament. The tournament is a fundraiser for GD Boosters that supports athletics in the district, at both the MS and HS. They also fund several scholarships for our graduating seniors.
Grade 8 Families, Yellow course selection sheets are due to Ms. Muise by the end of the day on Monday, April 8th. These forms must be signed by an adult. Course recommendations for 9th grade are on student SchoolBrains.
Reminders,
Chromebooks, we are spending a lot of time and money repairing chromebooks. If you refer to our middle school handbook, page 23, Section 7. Please know that all families are going to be charged if your student’s chromebook gets broken. We do understand that accidents happen. However, even with an accident things have to be paid for. If your child plays field hockey and their stick breaks a new stick needs to be purchased for your child to play. The district can not continue to accrue this expense.
Grade 8 families, if you have a student who is attending the high school this is the counselor breakdown. If you or your student have questions about the Yellow Course Selection Sheet please email these folks at the high school.
