While most of you have purchased tickets via our PTO Venmo account some of you are sending checks in school. That is totally ok. Teachers are now aware of that and will collect any checks and get them to me so I can get the payments to the PTO. The 4th grade teachers are also aware of this. Payment is due June 10th.
The Music Department welcomes all to attend our Spring concerts this week! Chorus will be performing on Tuesday, 6/7 and Band on Thursday 6/9. Both concerts will be at 7PM in MSS PAC. Please come and support our student musicians as they show off their hard work over the course of this crazy year!
There will be a Mental Health and Well-Being Webinar in partnership with the Walker Therapeutic and Educational Programs for our GDRSD staff and families. We understand this opportunity may come at short notice, but given recent events within our nation we felt this was an important opportunity to share before the end of the school year.
This webinar will focus on mental health, well-being, anxiety, and how this may impact learning and behavior in school and at home. This training will provide you with tools to recognize rising levels of anxiety and will offer practical solutions for decreasing stress for all. This webinar will be offered via Zoom in two sessions:
Grades K-6: 11:00am-12:00pm, June 9th
Grades 7-12: 6:00-7:00pm, June 9th
Registration for this webinar will close at 4:00pm on Wednesday, June 8th.
This opportunity has been funded by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Social-Emotional Learning and Mental Health Grant. We would like to thank Mina Burbridge, PsyD, and the Walker Therapeutic and Educational Programs for assisting us in presenting this opportunity. If you have any questions or would like any additional information regarding this webinar, please reach out to adougherty@gdrsd.org.
We are so excited for June and the start of Pride Month! As a middle school, we’ve had many conversations about what community looks, feels, and sounds like. Many students have shared that a community should feel safe, supportive, joyful, and inclusive. This month, and every month, it is important to make sure that our middle school follows through on these expectations for the LGBTQ+ community. We should always celebrate, highlight, share, and listen to LGBTQ+ stories and experiences and create that sense of connectedness and community.
Here are some resources about the celebration of pride and for folks who would like some resources geared toward talking with students:
Celebration of Pride | GLSEN (videos and stories!)
GLSEN, Welcoming Schools, and the Trevor Project have great resources!
Most of this information is reminders:
School Tool Box is up and running www.schooltoolbox.com. You can order your school supplies for next year as soon as you are ready. We will be looking to get this on our website also.
OVERDUE BOOKS. We need your help. Please look for and return overdue books. If you have any GDMS books at home please remind your students to bring them back to school. If there are questions or if your student lost a book please notify Mrs. Hourani via email, shourani@gdrsd.org directly or stop into the north library.
4th Grade Families Welcome to my weekly memo :)
Your 4th grade students visited the Middle School this week and for the most part this was a huge success. This was the first time we did student-led tours and really used our 5th grade students as a voice in the process. We hope that your 4th grader came home with only positive things to say.
8th Grade Families:
Students in Grade 8 are continuing their Civic duty (Section 4.2.c) to complete their "student-led nonpartisan civics project."They have gathered information about their topic, have learned how others have addressed the issue, and have decided on a course of action. Emails are being drafted, speeches written and practiced, materials collected for sculptures, images searched for infographics, and interviews of experts planned. The students who are interested in using social media as a tool have been asked to have their adults acknowledge their choice - a letter has been sent home with those students. Ask your students what their topic is and how they are trying to follow the "campsite rule" of civics- to leave the place better than the way you found it.
