Swallow Union Weekly Update Week of October 17th, 2022
Please be sure to check the Live Feed section of our website each week as we share updates on what our students are learning and engaging in during school.
This week our Kindergartners spent some time outside learning about different types of trees while exploring, noticing and wondering what they find. Thank you to the Nashua River Watershed for facilitating some fun learning activities!
On Thursday, our fourth graders hiked Mt. Wachusett! This field trip was an opportunity to engage our students outside of the classroom and to reinforce what students' are learning in Social Studies (physical features of North America), Science (Earth and Space Science topics of weathering and erosion), and Reading (character development of the read aloud books Lost Trail and Lost on a Mountain in Maine). As students hiked up Mt. Wachusett, they work to complete a scavenger hunt to look for various items related to these three content areas. A huge thank you to all of our amazing family volunteers who joined the hike!
Monster Mash - Update from the Principal & PTO:
In recognition of how close the fundraiser has come to meeting the PTO Feed the Tiger Fundraising goal, I am happy to announce that our students will be voting on a costume for their principal to wear to the Monster Mash on Friday the 28th. Students will be voting in school between an astronaut, shark or Fly Guy and the winning costume will be announced sometime next week during morning announcements.
The fundraising contest also includes three additional student winners that will be randomly selected by Mrs. Jarvis and Mrs. Dzwonek. Those prizes includes pizza for lunch, Principal for the Day, and arriving to school in a fire truck! There is still time for parents to donate to Feed the Tiger which enters your child(ren) into the drawings.
Volunteers Needed!
The PTO is in need of more volunteers for this week's coming Scholastic Book Fair and Friday Night's Monster Mash! Please take a peek at the sign-ups to see if you can help out! We greatly appreciate the support for these events for our students, school and families!

Notes from the Health Office:
Next week the health office is conducting vision and hearing screenings for students. If your child wears glasses, please be sure that they bring them and/or wear them to school.
Attention Parents of 3rd and 4th Grades
Next week the health office is conducting vision and hearing screenings for students. If your child wears glasses, please be sure that they bring them and/or wear them to school.
Physical exams are required by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for grades K, 3, 7, and 10. If you have not sent a physical in for your 3rd grader, please do so when your child has their scheduled physical exam visit this year. There are many 4th graders who do not have a physical exam on record from last year. Please send those in as soon as possible so that your child’s health record will be complete. They can be emailed to the nurses (jgervais@gdrsd.org, kdloureiro@gdrsd.org ) or a hard copy can be sent in with your child to school to give to the nurse.
Thank you,
Nurse Jen and Nurse Kate
Family Assistance for the Holidays:

If you are in need of some assistance with holiday food and/or gifts, please fill out this form and return it to your child’s teacher or school nurse as soon as possible. Again, all information is strictly confidential.
